High school track season off to strong start with Snow Canyon Invitational

ST. GEORGE — The high school track season is now officially out of the starting blocks, with some 1,750 athletes from dozens of schools taking part in the Snow Canyon Invitational last weekend.

Corner Canyon High from Draper was the overall winner of both the boys and girls meets. On the boys side, the Chargers finished with a total of 85 team points, with host team Snow Canyon placing second with 74 points.

Meanwhile, on the girls side, Corner Canyon won with 93.5 points, while runner-up Box Elder had 69. The top performing Southern Utah girls teams were Snow Canyon and Cedar, who tied for seventh overall with 31 points apiece.

Snow Canyon head coach Justin Redfearn said the event was the largest Snow Canyon Invitational ever, with 45 full high school teams participating, along with parts of 18 others, including a couple of schools from Idaho and Arizona.

“As far as weather goes we had a little of everything: rain, wind, lightning and cold and warm moments,” Redfearn told St. George News. “The coaches, athletes and spectators were fantastic during it all. We are so grateful for all the help from our parents and volunteers who helped make this meet possible.”

Following are selected highlights from the two-day meet:

In the girls 100-meter dash, Snow Canyon freshman Amelia Nadauld took first place with a time of 12.12 seconds. Nadauld also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.89, beating more than 150 other runners who entered the event. Nadauld also placed second in the long jump with a school-record leap measuring 17 feet, 7 inches, just 1.25 inches behind winner Kate Tueller, a senior at Northridge High.

In the boys javelin, senior Bo Hickman of Snow Canyon won the event with a throw measuring exactly 188 feet, while senior Sawyer Woods of Pine View placed second with a throw of 154 feet, 9.5 inches.

Also of note, Snow Canyon junior Trevor Gough won the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles races. Gough’s winning time in the 110 was 14.88 seconds, with Austin Eaton of Crimson Cliffs placing second in 15.04. In the 300-meter hurdles, Gough’s winning time was 38.79 seconds, while Snow Canyon teammate and fellow junior Matt MacLennan placed second in 39.92. Both of Gough’s winning hurdles marks were new school records, according to Redfearn.

Meanwhile Eaton, a junior at Crimson Cliffs, also placed second in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 10.5 inches.

Among the other highlights were Skyridge senior Kylie Olsen winning the girls 1600-meter race in a time of 5:00.99, a new meet record.

In the boys 1600-meter race, Olympus junior JoJo Jourdon edged Pine View senior Trey Despain by just under two seconds, with Jourdon winning in 4:11.29 and Despain placing second in 4:13.25. Despain’s time was reportedly a new Pine View High School record.

Cedar senior Quincy Esplin won the girls discus with a throw of 122 feet, 6 inches. Her junior teammate Kiara Hansen placed second with a best mark of 116 feet, 5 inches.

Carson Nowatzke, a senior at Snow Canyon, placed third in the boys shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 7 inches.

In the girls javelin, junior Ella Fielding of Cedar took first place with a mark of 112 feet, 2 inches. Junior Katie Elison of Hurricane finished second at 106 feet, 2 inches.

“I’m extremely impressed with the Region 10 athletes,” Redfearn added. “Once again, our athletes showed why they are some of the best in the whole state.”

Among the highlights from smaller Southern Utah schools, senior Madi Orton of Kanab cleared 5 feet, 3 inches to win the girls high jump, and the Water Canyon High School boys won the sprint medley relay.

The next major meet to be hosted by a Region 10 school is the Pine View Invitational, scheduled for March 24-25.
