Shortly before 2 p.m., firefighters arrived at the scene at 1882 South 2660 E. in  St. George to visible smoke and flames coming from the roof near a fireplace in the home, St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said. Once crews assessed the scene, they found the fire had spread throughout the attic of the home.

“At that point we pulled our crews out and we experienced a major roof and ceiling collapse shortly after that,” Stoker said. “The rest of this fire was fought as a defensive fire. Much of the roof did burn off in the attic area. We were able to save some areas of the home, but most of the home did receive water, smoke, and fire damage.”

Stoker said the residents of the home will be displaced due to the fire. No injuries were reported. Neighbors on the scene offered their own garages for two classic cars that were removed from the garage of the burning home before the flames caused the roof to collapse.

“They were able to get some of their belongings out prior to our arrival,” he said. “But it looks like the fire could have been burning in the attic for some time prior to our arrival.”

Others assisting the Fire Department included the St. George Police Department and the Washington City, Santa Clara and Ivins fire departments. Stoker added that there were no injuries reported by emergency responders.
