The St. George Fire Department and other first responders were dispatched to a home in the Cottonwood Drive neighborhood off Twin Lakes Drive around 3:20 p.m. after a passerby saw the fire on the home’s balcony and called authorities, St. George Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hooper said.

“We arrived on the scene and found heavy fire on the backside of the home,” he said.

It took approximately 10-15 minutes to put the fire out, Hooper said. During that time, the homeowner told firefighters they had four cats inside the house. The felines were retrieved by firefighters unharmed.

Once the fire was out, firefighters spent another 30 minutes making sure the fire hadn’t spread into the attic or elsewhere in the home, Hopper said.

While the home isn’t a total loss, he added, there is “significant damage” in and around the patio area in backside and smoke damage inside the home. This has rendered the home unfit for habitation for now.

The cause of the fire is unknown and currently under investigation, Hooper said.

Responding to the fire from the St. George Fire Department was one ladder truck, three fire engines, one squad vehicle and 18 firefighters. St. George Police officers and Gold Cross medics also responded to the incident.
