2 cars collide at Washington City intersection that’s slated for new stop light

WASHINGTON CITY — A left-hand turn reportedly resulted in a collision in Washington City Thursday afternoon. But police report some changes are coming to this intersection that could make it safer.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., the driver of a westbound Chevrolet Cruze turned left from 240 West onto George Washington Boulevard. At the same time, a Toyota 4Runner was traveling east on George Washington, which the Chevrolet’s driver reportedly didn’t see, Washington City Police Lt. Kory Klotz told St. George News.

Both vehicles veered left to avoid crashing, Klotz said, but the Toyota collided with the Chevrolet’s rear driver’s side door.

None of the people involved in the crash appeared to have sustained serious injuries, Klotz said. At the scene, the Washington City Fire Department and Gold Cross medically evaluated the Toyota’s driver and the Chevrolet’s three occupants — two adults wearing seat belts and a juvenile who was not.

The driver of the Chevrolet may receive a citation for making an improper left-hand turn, but police were still working the scene and Klotz could not say so definitively.

Klotz reminded drivers to take their time when entering an intersection, advising them to wait 30 seconds to a minute before turning.

“This intersection is definitely bad with the speeds and the visibility, so slow down, make sure it’s clear before entering the intersection,” he said. “But, the safety equipment (in this case) did work how it was supposed to, luckily.”

Additionally, Police Chief Jason Williams said the city plans to install a traffic light at the intersection before the new school year begins.

“Traffic has increased down here,” he said. “And the road’s design makes it warrant a traffic light down here now.”

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
