Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said that at approximately 8:45 a.m., the driver of a white Ford Escape was heading west on SR-56 when another vehicle pulled out from 4200 West to turn left onto SR-56 heading east.

The driver of Escape swerved to avoid the other car and overcorrected, causing her vehicle to roll, Ludlow said. The car eventually came to rest on its roof in the eastbound lanes of SR-26.

The occupants of the Escape, described as a woman in her early 20s and her 10-month-old baby, were not injured in the crash, Ludlow said. They were evaluated by Gold Cross Ambulance personnel at the scene.

Both mother and child were properly restrained, Ludlow said, adding, “This is a good example of what happens when you wear a seat belt.”

Meanwhile, the other driver who had pulled out to make the turn was cited for failure to yield, Ludlow said. Their vehicle was not damaged, and the driver stopped and remained at the scene to ensure everyone was safe.

The Ford Escape sustained serious damage and was later towed from the scene.

Traffic on SR-56 was impacted for approximately 30 minutes, including partial closure of the eastbound lanes. In addition to multiple Cedar City Police officers, Utah Highway Patrol, Iron County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar City Fire Department personnel responded.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
