4A boys volleyball: Hurricane, Desert Hills win in 1st round, will join Pine View, Crimson at state

ST. GEORGE — The Hurricane and Desert Hills boys volleyball teams won their respective first-round matches in the 4A state playoffs on Saturday. Hurricane won at home against Region 9 rival Snow Canyon, while Desert Hills earned a road victory at Cottonwood.

Hurricane and Desert Hills will join Pine View and Crimson Cliffs (which had first-round byes) in representing Region 9 at the upcoming state tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday (May 10-11) at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Hurricane 3, Snow Canyon 1

No. 16 seed Hurricane dropped the first set 20-25 against No. 17 Snow Canyon but the Tigers rallied to win the next three (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) and capture the match.

The first-round win means Hurricane will next face the No. 1 ranked Orem in the second round of the 4A playoffs at UVU. The Tigers vs. Tigers match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday on Court 2.

Desert Hills 3, Cottonwood 1

No. 18 Desert Hills defeated No. 15 Cottonwood in four sets, the last three of which were closely matched, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 26-24.

Thunder advance to play No. 2 Logan in the second round, with the match scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Friday on Court 2 at UVU in Orem.

Jordan 3, Dixie 0

At Jordan High School in Sandy, the No. 9 Beetdiggers swept No. 24 Dixie on Saturday afternoon by a score of 25-8, 25-11, 25-19.

Payson 3, Cedar 0

At Payson, the No. 12 Lions swept the No. 21 Cedar Reds. Payson won the first two sets by respective scores of 25-21 and 25-16 but the Reds rallied to build a late lead in the third set, at one point leading 24-18. Payson then scored six points in a row to tie the game, which eventually went in the Lions’ favor, 28-26.

Wiley Gunn and 20 assists and 12 digs for Cedar, along with two service aces. Landon Kreitzer had six kills and 10 digs, while Luke Munson and Kyler France added five kills and two blocks apiece. The Reds finished their inaugural season with an overall record of 8-17, including 5-7 in Region 9.

State tournament second round
