Police say ATV rider critically injured in collision on Cedar City’s Airport Road

CEDAR CITY — A man was taken to the hospital via Life Flight helicopter early Friday evening after the ATV he was driving was struck by a car on Airport Road in Cedar City.

The incident happened at approximately 5 p.m. near 600 N. Airport Road and involved an older-model four-wheeler and a white Honda passenger car.

Police said the ATV rider had been heading east on 580 North when he apparently lost control as he came onto Airport Road and was struck by southbound Honda.

The man, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, received assistance at the scene from other motorists and from employees of nearby Staheli West, who said they heard the crash from inside the company’s main office building.

One eyewitness was reportedly a nurse who was able to render first aid to the injured man until Gold Cross Ambulance personnel arrived.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said the ATV rider, who he described as being in his late 30s, was unconscious at the time he was transported.

“We appreciate all the help that was given by that nurse and other bystanders,” Ludlow said.

No other injuries were reported. 

The incident prompted the closure of Airport Road in both directions for at least two hours. As of 7 p.m., the road was still closed.

In addition to multiple Cedar City Police officers, Iron County Sheriff’s deputies and Cedar City Fire Department crews, multiple Utah Highway Patrol troopers also responded and were seen conducting aerial measurements and mapping of the scene using a drone.

Officials said the incident is still under investigation.

The injured man ended up being released from the hospital just three days later, his wife told Cedar City News on Wednesday.

“He came home on Monday,” she said. “He’s doing all right, all things considered. He has a broken left collarbone and three broken ribs, along with a gash on his head that had to be sutured, but nothing more serious.”
