ST. GEORGE — The baseball team at Utah Tech begins a tough stretch of the schedule with nine of its next 12 games on the road, beginning with a Western Athletic Conference series at Utah Valley University.

The Trailblazers and Wolverines tangled Thursday night at UCCU Ballpark in Orem, with Utah Tech falling 11-1. The Trailblazers were limited to just two hits on the night, a Hunter Katschke single in the fourth inning, and an Ethan Royal two-out single in the fifth, according to a news release.

The game Friday will be played at 2:05 p.m. The third and final game is tentatively scheduled for 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, but that contest could possibly be moved to Sunday.

The “Old Hammer Rivalry” leans toward the Trailblazers, as Utah Tech is 13-10 lifetime against UVU.

Last weekend, Utah Tech evened its WAC record at 6-6 after taking one game of a three-game series against WAC rival University of Texas Rio Grande Valley last weekend at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George.

The Trailblazers saw a ninth-inning lead disappear in a 13-11 loss in the opener, while the Vaqueros used a big third inning to clinch the series with a 14-5 triumph in game two.

Utah Tech turned the tables on UTRGV in the finale with an eight-run eighth inning to salvage one game in the set, 12-5.

Overall the Trailblazers are 9-20.

After Thursday’s game, UVU is now 14-17 overall and 5-5 in WAC play.

On the softball diamond, Utah Tech stumbled in a 12-4 defeat against Brigham Young University Tuesday. The Trailblazers led 4-1 before the Cougars reeled off 11 unanswered runs in the win.

The setback brought Utah Tech’s overall record to 11-22, including a 4-5 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.

Next the Trailblazers are in the Emerald City for a WAC series against Seattle University, which opens with a double-header Friday. Game times are scheduled at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Then game three is slated for Saturday at Logan Field in Seattle at 2 p.m.

The Redhawks are 14-21 overall and sit at 6-5 in WAC action.

Utah Tech is in its fourth year of WAC competition and won the regular season crown last year.
