CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — “This is living!” These three words have shaped the philosophy of Primrose Retirement Communities from the very beginning.
Primrose was founded by Jim Thares in 1989 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, a community known for its friendly, honest and hardworking people. Thares’ journey into the senior living industry began far earlier than he realized. It started with his close relationship with his grandfather, Andrew “Grandpa Andy” Thares.
“I was the oldest grandson, so he took me under his wing. I spent a lot of time with him after school at the grain elevator that my father and his brother owned,” Thares said. “One of his catchphrases was ‘If you take care of it, it will take care of you,’ and he lived by that. Whether it was a piece of machinery or a relationship with another person, he always treated it with the utmost respect.”
While working as a CPA in the mid-1980s, Thares noticed that his grandfather was sitting at home doing very little and lacking the purpose he used to have. Grandpa Andy had been productive his entire life, raised a family and contributed to society for many years. Thares thought, “Shame on us. Just because we get older doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy life,” and decided to look at solutions.
At that time, there were very few options for aging adults. Typically, you either moved in with your children or into a nursing home. It was clear that there should be another option, so Thares began researching the senior living industry and property development.
He decided to build a community that provided activities, healthy meals, fellowship opportunities, security and freedom for people so they had the opportunity to enjoy their retirement years to the fullest. This is what Primrose still strives to do today.
“Over the past 35 years, we’ve seen the senior living industry evolve greatly. What has remained consistent is the importance of relationships within the communities and the desire for purposeful living at all ages,” he said. “We offer a lifestyle that is based on decades of experience and customer feedback. We are very proud to be a part of the Washington/St. George market.”

“The thought of leaving my comfortable home to go to an assisted living and live with all those elderly people wasn’t a very enjoyable thought to me. When I arrived here and was taken to the apartment we now rent, I started to change my mind,” resident Berl G. said.
“The view was amazing, and I found that those elderly people are awesome to be with. The more I’m here, the more I enjoy the atmosphere and the people with whom I associate, and I found the staff are very enjoyable to be around. As one who likes to joke, I feel comfortable in joking with them.”
