ENTERPRISE — The Robert Holt family in Enterprise thinks there’s no better time for a service project than at a family reunion.
At the family farm in Enterprise Saturday afternoon, the Holts partnered with the St. George chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build 10 beds for children who need them.
“We have a lot of hands willing to work and ready to do it, so that’s what we did,” Kimball Holt, son of family patriarch Robert Holt, told St. George News.
“We do a service project pretty well every year, we just find something that will help the community and then go ahead and do it,” Holt added.
He said there were over 70 total members of the extended family working on the project during the course of the reunion.
“Everyone from my 7-year old daughter there pulling the staples out of the little boards, to my 12-year old son sanding, and I got the best job of chopping the wood,” Holt said. “It’s an awesome day.”
The yard teamed with Holts of all ages as they constructed the furniture.
Saws buzzed, drills whined and hammers pounded as boards became frames.
The final product, sanded and polished, glowed when completed.
As previously reported in St. George News, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a non-profit volunteer organization with chapters all over the country. They donate beds to children who need them.
“They’re built for aged 2-to-18-year olds,” St. George chapter president Ember Mitchell said.
She added that the Holt family and the chapter split the expenses of the raw materials for the 10 beds that were assembled Saturday.
Mitchell said the partnership between the chapter and the Holt family represents just one of the many arrangements Sleep in Heavenly Peace uses to facilitate construction of the beds.
“We’ll build for companies, we’ll have individual builds, we have public builds,” said Mitchell, adding that the staff is all volunteer.
“We need volunteers,” Mitchell said. “And we have a shed full of beds that are ready to go. We’re just looking to get them to the children who need them.”
