Red Hat Society provides fun, gives service

ST. GEORGE — The Red Hat Society was originally inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem which starts out: “When I grow old I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn’t match.”

It is now national social organization originally founded in 1998 in the United States for women age 50 and beyond, but now open to women of all ages. Today, there are over 20,000 chapters in the United States and over 30 other countries.

The Red Hat Society’s primary purpose is social interaction and bonding among women focusing on fun, friendship, fulfillment, fitness and freedom. You will often see them in their red and purple attire, complete with the hats, feathers and of course, the bling. You cannot help but smile when these very animated women are around. Yes, definitely focusing on fun.

But while they are definitely having fun, they are also very dedicated to the community and volunteering. They are the first to step up to help when assistance is needed.

A local chapter “Desert Rouge Hattitude” was the first to be called to help with registration at the “Driving Fore Charity” Golf Tournament. Their cheery demeanor and colorful attire brightened the day!

They also recently put together welcome bags for the St. George Marathon.

“When I grow old I shall wear purple” — definitely something to think about.
