ST. GEORGE — As part of his keynote address, Congressman Chris Stewart was asked a question by Washington County Home Builders and Realtors, “Will you be a Water Champion for Southern Utah Families?”

His reply, “Yes, I already am.” This was followed by cheers from participants at the Legislative Luncheon recently held on October 4th presented by the Southern Utah Home Builders Association (SUHBA) and the Washington County Board of Realtors (WCBR). Congressman Stewart received a “Defender of Housing – Water Champion for Southern Utah Families” award that represents the red rock vistas of Washington County, Utah.

Members of these two organizations are concerned with national exposure about how southern Utah needs to slow growth to help resolve water issues. “This is not the answer for growing families in our area,” said Mari Krashowetz, SUHBA’s Executive Officer.

“We are experiencing a housing shortage and not able to keep up with demand which has a direct impact on housing affordability. Slowing growth will compound this housing shortage. Our pioneer heritage struggled with water issues, and like the pioneers, we can work together to resolve them. We need water champions who will support and help acquire funds for vital water projects like a water reuse system and the Lake Powell Pipeline as to not rely solely on the Virgin River Basin.”

After Congressman Stewart accepted the invitation and award, the candidates participating in the Legislative Luncheon were then asked if they are willing to be Water Champions for Southern Utah Families, it was a unanimous “Yes.” Participants included Senator Evan Vickers, Commissioner Gil Almquist, Representative Walt Brooks, Colin Jack, and Joseph Elison. As we work together as community partners, we can address challenges and solve issues that impact all of us.
