ST GEORGE — As Passover approaches and the world grapples with the largest humanitarian refugee crisis in decades, Chabad Jewish Center will join Chabad centers in Europe and around the world in announcing that all are welcome at their Passover Seders — the festive dinners celebrating the holiday — on April 15.

The Seders take participants through the story of the miraculous liberation of the Jewish people from bondage in ancient Egypt, while sharing the relevance and beauty of the age-old festival in the modern world. Included in the Seders will be delectable Passover cuisine, traditional handmade round “Shmurah” Matzah as well as insights and songs together with family and friends.

“This year, as we sit down to our Seder, we will be welcoming those in need locally, and the needs of those suffering across the globe will be on our minds as well,” said Rabbi Mendy Cohen, who directs Chabad of Southern Utah. “In Kabbalistic teachings, Matzo is referred to as the “Bread of Faith” and the “Bread of Healing”, and we will share Matzo with the community at a time when faith, hope and healing are needed more than ever.”

Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis throughout Europe will be hosting more than 30,000 refugees from Ukraine at their Passover Seders as part of a massive humanitarian effort that Chabad has led in response to the crisis. Thousands more refugees will receive Passover food packages, enabling them to celebrate the holiday despite the difficulties they face.

In St George, Chabad has joined in the efforts to save lives, as many community members have contributed to the Ukraine Jewish Relief Fund at JewishSU.com/Ukraine.

Chabad welcomes Southern Utah to join the Passover Seder in keeping with the teachings of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, the most influential rabbi in modern history, who was born 120 years ago in Ukraine. In 1954, the Rebbe launched the Shmurah Matzah initiative as part of an effort to create awareness and promote observance of Passover. An estimated four million hand-baked Shmurah Matzah will be distributed by the Chabad-Lubavitch movement this year.

All are welcome to join the community seder, regardless of Jewish affiliation or background. Limited space available, make sure to RSVP now. Reservations can be made online at JewishSU.com/Passover22, by April 12.

What is the holiday of Passover?

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated this year from sundown on Friday night, April 15 until after nightfall on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Passover commemorates the exodus of the Jews from Egypt and will be celebrated with festive “Seder” dinners on April 15 and 16, 2022. Other holiday observances include restricting the consumption of leavened products such as bread and pasta, instead eating unleavened matzo. Additional information about the Passover holiday is available at JewishSU.com/Passover.
