‘Top-notch content’: Comedic radio duo joins Planet 105.1 — and they’re stoked about it

ST. GEORGE —This comedic radio personality couple just crossed over to a new radio station, and they’re shouting it from the rooftops.

Husband and wife Mike (Mikey) and Bonnie Foley just joined the Canyon Media team as morning show hosts at Planet 105.1, and they have nothing but positive things to say about the transition.

“For many years I would sit across the street and be so jealous of Canyon Media,” Mikey Foley said. “That they had cameras, writers, all of this like ‘giant sandbox’ to play in.”

Mikey Foley said he’s constantly amazed at how high the morale is at Canyon Media – something he hasn’t experienced in the past. The couple agreed that it’s been the best decision and look forward to being part of a company that aligns with their visions.

“Planet 105.1 has a long history of being family-friendly and ‘Mikey & the Mrs.’ have the talent and ability to make family-friendly funny and entertaining,” said Ben Lindquist, general manager at Canyon Media.

Not only are they enjoying the company vibe and staff, but Mikey Foley said they’re excited to play the music on Planet 105.1, which is much different than their last radio show’s top 40.

“I’ve always loved the music on Planet 105.1,” Mikey Foley said. “I can switch up my mood by playing bands like the Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls. Or if I’m in the mood to play something, I can just play it and I know that it’ll make people happy.”

Mikey Foley said his pathway into the world of radio all started when he was fired from a job selling tires. He heard an advertisement on the radio one day that STAR98 was looking for an outgoing personality to be on their morning show.

He drove over to the radio station and said he was there for the radio job.

“And he was like, ‘Do you have any experience?’ And I said, ‘No, but I think I’m pretty funny.’ And the guy just looked at me for a second and said, “Alright, you’re on Friday. Let’s see what you got,” Mikey Foley said.

Foley said he auditioned that Friday by doing a show with Robin and did a “good enough job” that eventually he was hired for the morning show. He was on air with STAR98 for about one and a half years, then went on to do the Dez and Mikey Show at B92.1 for about two years. After his co-host quit, he began to look for a new co-host.

After trying everyone he could think of, he finally asked his wife Bonnie so he would have someone to talk to on air.

“Bonnie came in and we had so much fun,” Mikey Foley said. “She did such a good job just like ripping on me and riffing with me that eventually she was hired as a permanent cohost and then it was the Mikey and the Mrs. Show.”

When Bonnie Foley first started on air, she said she had no background in radio either.

“I think I have a background in being outspoken and not caring what other people think of me, so that leads a lot into radio,” Bonnie Foley said.

“Which is really hard to find,” her husband added, “especially with a female co-host, someone who doesn’t care and who is brutally honest.”

Being married meant they clicked naturally on air, and after a few shows, they became co-hosts without much discussion. The couple has been doing radio shows together for the last seven years now and have been married for 19 years.

“In Hollywood years, we’ve been together for 50,” Mikey Foley said, laughing. “But yeah, we like each other and hopefully that translates on the radio.”

When asked if living together and working together can become too much, Bonnie Foley said yes. Her husband is a workaholic who often takes his work home with him, constantly thinking about new videos or other content he can create.

“Especially the first few years, anything that happened at home he’d go, ‘Save it for the radio,’” she said. “If we were in the middle of an argument, he would say, ‘Save it for the radio.’”

Mikey Foley said he finds vacations to be a nuisance that gets in the way of what he really wants to do – come up with funny stuff and make hilarious content.

“And yes, that’s a problem,” Mikey Foley said. “I’ll save that for a therapist, not the air, but …”

As for the move to Canyon Media, the couple said it’s always been on their radar, and after their previous company went through a buyout, it was clear they had different visions. They’re loving every minute of their new radio home and are grateful to be there.

“We have some of the most talented people in the media industry, and anytime you can add someone like Mikey & the Mrs. to the team, you do it,” Lindquist said. “They both bring a positive energy, a hard-working attitude and a desire to deliver top-notch content. Mix that with the type of environment and leadership we have on our team and we think Southern Utah is going to love waking up and listening to Mikey & the Mrs.”

Listen to the Mikey and the Mrs. morning show on Planet 105.1 weekdays from 6 a.m.-a.m. To follow along with their adventures, find Mikey and the Mrs. on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
