ST. GEORGE — In the wake of Susan Lewis’ departure as the Washington County clerk/auditor, five people have filed to replace her and will be featured in a debate hosted by the Washington County Republican Party Tuesday, May 30.

Lewis announced she was resigning earlier this month due to her family planning to move to a new home in Iron County. Her last day as the county clerk/auditor was May 17.

In the meantime, the Washington County Republic Party put the call out for volunteers to file as candidates to replace Lewis and serve the remainder of her term.

Since Lewis held the position as a Republican, Utah law mandates the county party select her replacement. Selection will be handled through the party’s County Central Committee during a special election set for June 6.

Individuals who have filed to run include Ryan Sullivan, Marlee Meyers, Tim Taylor, Brett Tolly and Larry Mulcock.

However, prior to the special election, members of the central committee and the public have the opportunity to hear from the candidates.

The Washington County Republican Party has organized a debate between the candidates for 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, at the Washington City Community Center, located at 350 Community Center Drive in Washington City.

Though the debate is primarily meant for members of the County Central Committee, as they will select the new clerk/auditor, the public is welcome to attend the debate. Seating is limited with priority given to County Central Committee members.

Questions or concerns about the debate can be directed to Brandan Morgan, Washington County Republican Party secretary, at 435-862-5473, or [email protected].

In Washington County, the county clerk/auditor is an elected position that oversees elections, maintains and examines the county’s financial records and prepares the annual county budget. The office also assists in calculating annual property tax values, in conjunction with the county assessor’s office, and issues county business and marriage licenses.
