Local 2nd graders are visiting Cedar City fire station during ‘Life Safety Week’

CEDAR CITY — Second graders throughout Iron County are making field trips to Cedar City’s main fire station this week to learn about safety.

The theme of this year’s Life Safety Week is “Close before You Doze,” meaning people should remember to shut their bedroom door before going to sleep at night. Fire officials say that simple action helps curtail the spread of a fire and can potentially save lives.

Along with that suggestion, it’s recommended that everyone also know how to escape their bedroom (or any other room) in the event that one or more door exits are inaccessible due to a fire.

Students and their teachers were able to put this into practice in the Life Safety House adjacent to Cedar City’s Fire Station No. 1, when they took turns jumping out the ground-floor window to safety.

The Life Safety House tour was one of several stations that the groups visited on a rotational basis. The students heard about bike and pedestrian safety from a Cedar City Police officer and outdoor fire safety from U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management personnel.

They also heard from 911 dispatchers who work at Cedar City Communications and emergency responders who work for Gold Cross Ambulance. In addition, Cedar City Fire Department firefighters gave tours of the station and explained how they use their various tools and equipment.

Tuesday afternoon’s classes were from nearby North Elementary. Various other Iron County elementary schools, along with home-schooled students, are scheduled to take part throughout the week. By the end of the day on Friday, officials estimate that nearly 1,000 second graders will have participated.

The students were also encouraged to share the safety tips they learned with their parents and other family members.
