ST. GEORGE — The Trailblazers need to circle the wagons.
In-state rival University of Utah beat Utah Tech’s baseball team 13-3 Tuesday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George.
It was the seventh loss in a row for the Trailblazers, who last won on April 14. Utah Tech is 1-16 on the road this season and stands at 9-31 overall.
The Trailblazers are alone in the cellar of the 13-team Western Athletic Conference with a 4-14 mark in conference play.
Utah Tech started on the right foot Tuesday, taking a 2-0 lead over the Utes in the second inning. Tyson Fisher singled and scored and Garrett Cutting smacked a ground-rule double and also scored.
But it was all Utah after that. The Utes plated 10 unanswered tallies over the next four innings to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
Sean Keating’s pinch-hit homer got one run back for the Trailblazers in the bottom of the sixth.
But a three-run shot from Utah’s Davis Cop brought the lead back up to double digits and the game ended on the 10-run rule.
Utah Tech will look to get back on the winner’s side of the ledger this weekend in a WAC series versus in-state rival Utah Valley University, which is 22-17 overall and 8-8 in WAC action.
Friday’s series opener at Bruce Hurst Field begins at 6:05 p.m.
Game 2 of the series will have first pitch at 2:05 p.m. and the finale on Sunday is slated to start at 12:05 p.m.
