ST. GEORGE —A hook, line and a desire to fish are all you need to have fun at the annual Fishing Derby, Saturday, April 1, at the Tawa Ponds, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Hosted by the City of St. George, in partnership with Southern Utah Anglers, this free event is a unique opportunity for anyone — especially children — to learn how to fish.
“It is a great community event for families to enjoy fishing together — or participate together in something totally new,” said Michelle Graves, deputy director of arts and events for the City of St. George, in a news release. “We want to ensure all children can experience the joy of fishing.”
There is no need to register. Fishing poles and bait will be available at no cost for children who do not own their own poles. Participants and spectators are encouraged to take a cooler for caught fish and a chair for seating. Prizes will be given out to participating children.
Throughout the Fishing Derby, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will conduct brief lessons on fishing etiquette. Children 12 and younger do not need a license, and those 13 and older are welcome to participate if they have a valid fishing license.
“The Fishing Derby is a great opportunity for kids to learn how to fish who otherwise might not have a chance,” Hannah Keller, a recreation supervisor for camps and programs, said in a news release. “Families can come out for free, use fishing poles that are provided and learn this new activity together.”
Tawa Ponds is located at 2200 Snow Canyon Parkway.
