‘Something for everybody’: Attend a candle-making class at this new boutique in St. George

ST. GEORGE —A business owner has placed her own hand-poured candles into a newly renovated storefront, but there’s more to the store than meets the eye.

“It’s pretty much a full boutique, but in the back what we have is custom candle-making,” Melissa Caufield, the owner of Arrows & Antlers Candle Co., said. “Come in, pick out your own candle and your own custom-blended fragrance. It burns for about 60 hours and it’s 100% soy wax, so better for you and better for the environment.”

Walking into Arrows & Antlers Candle Co., customers are greeted with a variety of boutique items from small businesses, which include everything from clothing and jewelry to modern air plant holders. Approaching the middle of the store, Caufield’s entire line of custom, clean-burning candles can be seen lining the walls – something she’s spent six years perfecting.

All of this is a dream come true for Caufield, who’s been a medical esthetician for the last 16 years. While looking for a clean-burning candle solution for herself, she began making her own natural candles in her home kitchen. After receiving a positive response from those around her, she began selling her candles as a side business and attended local markets in California.

In October 2022, she and her husband made the move to Southern Utah, and that’s when she felt inspired to put aside her skin career and go all-in on her candle business.

“I wanted to do my own thing, and I wanted to do candles,” Caufield said. “I found the space and just went for it. It’s like my new little baby.”

Candles by Arrows & Antlers Candle Co. are 100% soy wax and essential oil fragrance blends with cotton wicks, which Caufield said makes them clean-burning candles. The custom line of hand-poured candles comes in 18 fragrance blends, with scent categories that include Citrus & Fruity, Ozone & Fresh, Woody & Warm and Floral.

“I feel like there’s something for everybody,” she said about the candle blends. “There’s more natural smelling like Lavender or Rosemary Sage. If you like it more flowery, there’s the Pink Peony or Raspberry Prosecco. Saffron Tobacco and Oak Moss and Timber are more masculine.”

The couple spent time renovating the store, which included removing flooring and repairing large holes in the walls. While the space has been everything from a church to a catering business and even a laundry mat, Caufield said she’s happy to have transformed it into her own shop that officially opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting three weeks ago.

Continuing to the back of the store, a large table and chairs sit under a flowered accent wall surrounded by essential oil fragrances and empty vessels. Open to the public by either an appointment or walk-in, Caufield said this spot is for candlemaking and is fun for people of all ages. Whether you want to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, a girls’ night out or anything in between, this fun social setting lets people get creative while walking away with something sweet.

Upon arrival, attendees first pick the type of vessel they want to house their candles. Sizes range from 8-16 ounces and smaller tin jars are available for kids. Next, they choose from over 30 essential oil fragrances, with the option to create custom blends by mixing different scents together.

Each person – including children – can pour their own candles and place their own wicks. Caufield is there to help with each step and provide instruction.

Candle-making workshops last about 45 minutes, but having fun is the most important part and she said guests are encouraged to stay as long as they’d like. After the candles are poured, they take about an hour and a half to set. Upon pickup, attendees can decorate their candles with crystals or flowers and also customize their vessels.

Candle-making class options also include private events and elite private parties, as well as “kiddo candle-making.”

Arrow and Antlers Candle Co. is also a boutique featuring items like clothing, handmade jewelry, candle care kits, inspirational notebooks, single-serve coffee and tea bags and more.

“We wanted to be able to have a variety of things in here,” she said about the shop. “Something for everyone. I offer all small brands, I don’t do big-box stuff. Everything I order from is small, small companies like mine, because I want to give back.”

While Caufield said her current focus is on the new shop, her big dreams include opening multiple locations in the future.

Arrows & Antlers Candle Co. is located at 157 E. Riverside Dr. Suite 3C in St. George. To shop online or book a candle-making class, see their website or follow them on Instagram.
