ST. GEORGE — After Region 10’s girls golf teams had last week off due to spring break, the Pine View Panthers captured the second region match of the season by a 15-stroke margin on Thursday.

The match, played at Southgate Golf Club, was originally scheduled to go 18 holes but was halted after the first nine.

Pine View Coach Matt Wieland told St. George News some players had been taking the ACT that morning.

“We were forced to delay the start, which didn’t leave us time for a full 18,” he said.

Pine View’s Alyssa Butterfus was the top individual scorer with 36 strokes. She was followed closely by Crimson Cliffs freshman Kate Walker, who shot a 37.

“It was great to see Alyssa come out on top,” Wieland said. “She was battling back and forth all day with Kate right up until the end. It would have been fun to see them keep battling for another nine holes. I think we’re going to see that a lot this season.”

Wieland called newcomer Walker “a phenomenal player and a great addition to the region.”

Pine View scored 176 as a team, while runner-up Cedar High had 191 strokes and Crimson took third with 200.

“I think we’re seeing Cedar emerge as a serious contender,” Wieland added. “Those girls have obviously put a lot of work in and it’s showing.”

Next week’s match is scheduled for Thursday, March 30 at Sunbrook Golf Club.
