ST. GEORGE — Snow Canyon High School’s student executive council is set on making wishes come true for local critically ill children as they have partnered with Make-a-Wish Utah for another year.
“We are super excited for this,” said Gwyneth Lamoreaux, who serves as president of the executive student council. “It is one of our biggest events every year.”
For two weeks, which began Tuesday, the school will host several events and fundraisers to benefit the selected children. The high school has been assigned a specific child to help raise funds for and make his wish come true.
According to the executive council members, Hudson is 5 years old (Make-a-Wish does not reveal the last name for privacy reasons). In April 2022, Hudson was diagnosed with high-risk stage 4 cancer when a tumor was found on his adrenal gland. Doctors were able to remove the tumor but discovered the cancer had spread to his bone marrow. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
“His wish is to go to Walt Disney World,” Lamoreaux said. “He originally wished to go to a Monster Jam but switched after seeing a Monster Jam multiple times.”
Hudson’s favorite character is Lightning McQueen from the Disney movie “Cars” and a major reason he wants to visit the theme park.
To help Hudson get to Florida, students will host a majority of events during school hours with an additional three events open to the public.
They also will be collecting donations at Snow Canyon High School’s front office or on their website via Venmo.
The student events include cornhole, pickleball and dodgeball tournaments, penny wars, a Hot Wheels derby, an assembly and of course a “Morp” dance. There are entry fees for each.
The executive council’s main goal this year is to raise $12,000.
There is one specific event that is geared toward Hudson.
“He loves Hot Wheels, so we are doing a derby,” Lamoreaux added.
In past years, the selected Make-a-Wish recipient has attended specific events dedicated toward them. Last year, students hosted an EA Sports video game tournament in which the recipient participated and got to play with several students.
The three community events feature a car wash on Saturday, March 25, starting at 9 a.m. The students will be at the high school in the senior parking lot to wash cars for $5 each.
The next event is called “SC Sunset,” which will be held on the football field on Wednesday, March 29, from 5:30-9 p.m.
“It will be a carnival-type fun event,” student body tech specialist Abby Despain said. “It is literally for any age.”
The SC Sunset will consist of all school organizations that will each host a table with a carnival game where attendees can win prizes. The entry fee is $5.
“There will be live performances and music from our student body,” Despain added. “Just going to be a fun night for all.”
A silent auction is scheduled the same night.
The last community event will be a high fitness class at the football field at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 1. The Hi-Fit was well attended last year by many mothers and women, Lamoreaux said. However, she said anyone is welcome and they have had boys and men participate.
