ST. GEORGE — Portions of the Southgate Golf Club were flooded Thursday morning after heavy rainfall caused the Santa Clara River to surge over its banks.

Director of Operations Colby Cowan sent pictures and an email to St. George News describing the damage.

“Southgate Golf Club front nine will be closed for the next week or so as we work to secure one golf cart bridge and the golf cart path under Dixie Drive,” Cowan wrote.

He went on to note that several fairways on the front nine (holes 2, 4, 8 and 9) were impacted by flood water and sediment.

“We hope to have the front nine open in the next week or so,” Cowan wrote.

He added that the Southgate maintenance staff, under the direction of Mark Hamel, will begin working on cleaning the affected areas starting Friday.

Additionally, Cowan said Sunbrook Golf Club has closed the Black Rock nine holes “until water subsides and carts can cross the wash.”

The two other city-owned golf courses in the St. George area (St. George Golf Club and Dixie Red Hills Golf Club) were spared significant damage from the storm.

“All other city-owned golf courses remain open for regular play,” Cowan wrote. “For the most part, the local golf courses were not impacted by the severe rainstorm yesterday and runoff from Gunlock Reservoir.”
