ST. GEORGE — A destructive Littlefield fire resulted in the total loss of a motor home and the death of a resident’s dog Thursday afternoon.

Just after 1 p.m., the Beaver Dam-Littlefield Fire District responded to reports of a structure fire at King’s Court RV Park off state Route 91. On arrival, crews found the home “fully engulfed.” Assistant Fire Chief Andre Ojeda told St. George News that a nearby sedan and several trees also caught fire.

The district’s initial attack focused on a fifth-wheel and a pull-behind RV that were at risk had the blaze spread, Ojeda said. While neither caught fire nor sustained internal damage, both had heat-caused broken windows and melted plastic.

Crews responded with a fire engine and a water tender truck, which carried approximately 3,500 gallons of water, Ojeda said.

Dixie Power disconnected power throughout the park. Electricity was restored once the fire was suppressed, save for the motor home and a neighboring structure, he added.

While the trees were “charred a little,” crews managed to extinguish the flames and save the trees. However, the fire resulted in a “complete destruction” of the motor home and vehicle, Ojeda said.

“We were lucky enough — with this wind — to get there in time and protect the other structures,” he said.

While the homeowner escaped the blaze, his dog ran back into the home, Ojeda said. The man attempted to rescue his dog, sustaining burns, but the pet ultimately died.

“The fire got so intense that he just had to walk out,” he said.

The district’s medical team assisted the homeowner, but the man refused ambulance transport.

Additionally, Ojeda said owners of motor homes and travel trailers should be cautious about participating in activities involving flames outside these structures, as “once a fire gets going, the plastic — the synthetics that are in there — you just can’t stop those.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
