The Tigers battled to a three-point lead at halftime, 21-18, before dominating the third session 23-2  to secure the victory.

Larsen told St. George News after the win that some key halftime adjustments led to the third quarter outburst.

“We talked about our offense, and how we need to be smart with the ball,” Larsen said. “They’re going to want to come out strong, we need to come out stronger. You have to be smart, play good D and help each other out, because we’re a team and this is a team game.”

Abby Stout led the Tigers with 14 points in the win, while Addison Crandall chipped in with 11 points. Elisa Napoli (seven points), MJ Erickson (six) and Nina Dominguez (two points) rounded out Hurricane’s offensive output.

Meanwhile senior Avery Gustin tied the game-high with 14 points for Pine View. Ellie Norton, also honored before the game on senior night, scored 13 points including two 3-pointers for the Panthers.

Hurricane has a chance to finish .500 in Region 10 play, facing Cedar at home in the Tigers Den on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

“I think if we can keep that mentality that we have the ability, we can do really good,” Larsen said. “I think we can do good in the playoffs and make it to state.”

Meanwhile, Pine View will look for its fourth Region 10 win in its final regular season game, at Desert Hills on Thursday, Feb. 16 also at 7 p.m.

Cedar 41, Dixie 39

Both teams started out slowly, with the score at 1-1 six minutes into the contest. Dixie then got baskets from Kealah Faumuina and Jaycee Bundy, taking a 6-4 lead after one quarter.

With 2:07 left in the second period, Cedar senior Anna Robison made a free throw to put the Reds up 13-12, but Dixie then went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and take a 20-13 halftime lead.

The third quarter belonged to Cedar, as the Reds outscored the Flyers 16-7 to take a 29-27 lead.

Cedar then went on an 8-2 run to briefly take an eight-point lead, but Dixie hit a couple key baskets to close back within three, 37-34 at the midway point of the fourth.

Kiara Hansen found teammate Annalyse Shimada underneath for two points, putting the Reds up 39-34 with just under four minutes remaining.

Dixie kept chipping away at the Reds’ lead, eventually tying the game 39-39 on a free throw by Faumuina with 2:11 to go.

The only points scored from then on were a pair of free throws by Cedar’s Mya Bishoff that gave the Reds a 41-39 lead with one minute left.

Dixie did get one last shot in the final seconds, but Faumuina’s attempt inside missed, and Cedar’s Kenzie Bird got the rebound to seal the win.

“She’s a good player and she got a good shot. She just missed it,” Cedar head coach Corry Nielsen said of Faumuina afterward. “She could have very easily made that.”

“We had our own lapses, you know, but that’s basketball,” Nielsen added. “I kind of wish we would have made some more foul shots there towards the end.”

“I’ve been coaching long enough to know it all evens out,” he added, noting that Cedar has now won three of its last four contests. “You lose some of the games you should have won, and you win some of the games you probably should have lost.”

Cedar improved to 5-14 with the win, 5-6 in Region 10 play with one game remaining, a road contest at Hurricane on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Dixie dropped to 13-8 overall, 7-4 in region play, but remains in second place in the standings with one regular season game left. The Flyers host Crimson Cliffs on Thursday at 7 p.m.
