St. George designer opens two shops in historic downtown, offers one-of-a-kind home decor and gifts

ST. GEORGE —One designer and illustrator has opened not one, but two shops in historic downtown, each featuring her unique designs on everything from home decor to gifts and Utah souvenirs. And here’s why you should see it.

Heather Carson, the owner of both Field Study and Mojave, said she’s always had a love for art and design. Growing up, she often had art and craft days with friends. While others proudly took their projects home, she took hers door-to-door to sell them, instead.

As a go-getting artistic entrepreneur at a young age, she followed her passions into adulthood and has now been a designer for over 30 years.

Her skills in illustration and graphic design have led to a variety of online businesses and in-person pop-up events. While she’s no stranger to business ownership, Carson said Field Study is the first brick-and-mortar store she’s owned.

Field Study’s original location, which opened in 2019, was inside the Book Bungalow. In 2021, Carson moved the shop to its current location – the nearby Morris House. The shop’s interior is influenced mainly by a classic mid-century Scandinavian design with a touch of southwest desert vibes.

“It’s been a roller coaster, but it’s been a good challenge,” she said. “It’s been fun to meet so many fun people and feel the support of the community. Being part of this historic downtown area has been really great.”

Field Study is a lifestyle brand based on Carson’s own graphic art and illustrative designs, which can be seen throughout the two-story shop. Her designs are currently on prints, note cards, wrapping paper, journals and more. Many of the fabric prints are also created from her designs and can be seen on tote bags, pillows and decorative trays.

“A lot of what you’ll find in here is unique just to me,” she said. “As a designer, this is also my studio. It’s a place to merge my style of art and design with other products that I love and that I feel fit my style.”

Carson said the name Field Study stems from the concept that design can be a field study in itself. The name also gives her the freedom to constantly change, evolve and experiment with both the shop design and its products. Items seen lining the shelves are sourced from people and shops all over the world.

“It’s always a treasure hunt, trying to find things,” Carson said. “It’s fun for me as a designer. It’s like another layer of a canvas, a 3D canvas. I get to play with all the forms and light and color and patterns to make it cohesive.”

But that’s not the only store Carson has at Green Gate Village.

Last year, she opened an additional store – Mojave – that’s located kitty-corner from Field Study. Mojave focuses on desert-inspired gifts and goods, along with Southern Utah souvenirs that are exclusively designed by Carson herself. Browse through one-of-a-kind postcards, keychains, pins, hats, t-shirts, stickers, mugs, Utah-shaped cutting boards and more.

Carson is thankful for the support she has received from the community and looks forward to creating more unique designs that represent her love for art and the beauty of Southern Utah. Outside her stores, she is also available for commission design work, such as corporate interior design, product development and design and branding.
