ST. GEORGE — Less than a mile from Bluff Street, a structure fire at a residence on 500 South caused two residents to be displaced from their homes and a section of the street to be blocked off.

Capt. Rick Nelson of the St. George Fire Department told St. George News that fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 8:13 a.m. along with the St. George Police Dept. and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Nelson said when they arrived to the residence firefighters found that the fire originated in the casita. They were able to contain the damages to the kitchen.

The electricity in the main home and the casita have been turned off in order to investigate the cause of the fire. While there were no injuries, both a resident from the casita and the main home have been displaced and will be taken care of by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Nelson said.

The scene was cleared and the road reopened at approximately 10 a.m.

Nelson added the best way to stay safe is to be aware of what appliances are on when leaving the house.

“Be aware of everything,” he advised.

If a stove isn’t hardwired to electricity inside the home, it would be a good idea to unplug it while away from home, Nelson said. He also noted that residents should make sure that they are not overloading electricity outlets.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
