Paper Jams: Grooving with St. George Jazz All-Stars ahead of Jazz Fest

FEATURE — Live music has returned to Southern Utah, and Brendon Gunn is back in the Cloud 9 Studios to highlight local musicians, so gather around for another session of “Paper Jams.”

This month, we’re highlighting Glenn Webb and Robert Schmidt of the St. George Jazz All-Stars to perform “All of Me” and “Neither Here Nor There.”

Join Webb on the vibraphone and Schmidt on the trumpet as they serenade the Cloud 9 Studios audience in the media player above.

Gunn describes the pair’s musical talent as “sensational.”

“We are just a duo here today,” Webb said, “but usually we have 5-6-8, and we have a big band — the Rebel Jazz Band — that plays around town a lot.”

The band’s next big gig will be at the St. George Jazz Festival on Feb. 10-11 at the Cox Performing Arts Center at Utah Tech.

The annual festival brings world-class performers to Southern Utah to inspire and educate an ever-growing pool of talented jazz students. Middle and high school jazz ensembles participate in a competition adjudicated by some of the finest jazz educators in the state, and the top band in the high school division will enjoy the opportunity to share the stage with guest artists.

This year’s festival features two days of clinics and performances, including Kat Edmonson on Feb. 10 and Francisco Torres on Feb. 11. Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Cox Auditorium. Buy tickets online.

Whether you’re a student learning to improvise, an educator looking to enhance the skills of your jazz ensemble or purely a listener and lover of jazz music, the St. George Jazz Festival is an event you don’t want to miss.
