The incident occurred near 4500 West and Midvalley Road, a short distance to the southeast of the Three Peaks Recreation Area.

Although the investigation remains active and ongoing, deputy Iron County attorney Trajan Evans, who is also the county’s public information officer, provided preliminary details to Cedar City News via telephone shortly after 9 p.m.

“At 5:35 p.m., Iron County Sheriff’s deputies and Enoch City Police officers responded to the area of 4680 North 4500 West on a report of a suspicious person in possession of a firearm,” Evans told Cedar City News.

“It was reported that the subject was noncompliant with the officers’ commands and refused to exit the vehicle,” Evans said. “During law enforcement contact with the subject, two officers discharged their weapons and she was struck by the gunfire.”

The responding officers rushed to provide first aid to the injured woman, who was later transported by Intermountain Life Flight helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital for treatment, Evans said.

No identifying information about the woman has yet been released, nor has any information regarding the nature or extent of her injuries.

According to an updated news release issued on Monday, “The subject is reported to be in stable condition and is in recovery.”

The Iron Garfield Beaver Critical Incident Task Force responded to the scene and will be handling the investigation into the incident, added Evans, who is also the public information officer for the task force.

Evans said that additional information will be released after the investigation is finished. Investigators are expected to be at the scene for another few hours, until around midnight or possibly longer, he added.

This is a developing story.
