CEDAR CITY — The Canyon View High School drill team won its second straight region title on Saturday.
The event took place at Emery High School in Castle Dale, where the Talons competed against four other Region 12 teams, namely Emery, Carbon, Richfield and Grand.
The Talons swept all three performance categories, taking first in military, dance and show.
“We are so proud of our Talons,” Canyon View head coach Nicole Mikkelson told Cedar City News. “These girls are talented, smart, kind and hard-working. They continue to show up every day supporting each other to be the best they can be.”
In addition to taking home the region trophy, several Canyon View drill team members received individual awards at the region meet. Winning all-region honors were Madi Dastrup, Camden Olenslager and Presley Miller.
That same trio was also named to the Academic All-Region team, along with Regan Miller, Faith Shortt, McKinlee Urie and Shelby Zobell. In addition, seniors Cali Hinton, Regan Miller and McKinlee Urie were named all-state drill team captains.
Regan Miller also won the individual “drill down” competition held just before the region results were announced.
There are 36 members on this year’s Talons team, Mikkelson noted.
Next week, Canyon View will head to the 3A state championships, where the top-ranked Talons will be hoping to defend the state title they won last year. The 2A/3A/4A state competition is scheduled to take place Feb. 2-3 at Utah Valley University in Orem.
“We know they will be amazing at state and we can’t wait to watch them leave it all on the floor one last time,” Mikkelson added.
