Although the Desert Hills Tempest Line took first place in the show category with its dazzlingly choreographed steampunk-themed number, Dixie won both the military and dance categories and captured first place overall.

“All of the Region 10 teams are excellent, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the state,” Dixie coach Laurel Peterson told St. George News afterward.

“The other coaches and I are so proud of the Jetettes’ performance,” Peterson added. “They have been working incredibly hard, and it was reflected in their performance in each routine.”

Monday night’s sizable crowd in Utah Tech University’s Burns Arena was divided into five sections, one for each of the five teams competing: Dixie, Desert Hills, Snow Canyon, Cedar and Crimson Cliffs.

The evening’s program started with the five schools each performing their military routine. Next came the dance category, followed by the show category.

Coming in second place in show was Snow Canyon’s “Warrior Nation” number that emphasized the school’s mascot, complete with spears and shields. Dixie took third in show with its celebration of Chinese culture, featuring dragons, fans and spinning umbrellas.

Also popular was Cedar High’s show number featuring an array of one-eyed purple creatures and Crimson Cliffs’ performance that had the dancers in costumes representing basketball, baseball and football teams.

During the program’s intermissions, various other groups performed, including local youth dance groups, high school cheerleading squads and the university dance teams from SUU and UTU.

Individual awards were also given out, including certificates for all-region and all-state honorees, plus one “hero” award chosen by each team.

The Region 10 teams will next compete at the 4A state competition at Utah Valley University in Orem on Feb. 2-3, where Dixie will be vying for its fourth straight state title.
