ST. GEORGE — Utah Tech University has grown its graduate studies program from the ground up in the last five years going from nothing to five master’s degree pathways and still many more to come.
Chris Guyman, who serves as the associate provost for academic planning and operations at Utah Tech, told St. George news that he expects another five master’s degree programs to be added within the next few years, which will double the overall graduate program at the university.
“I personally believe that the master’s degree of the 21st century is as important as a bachelor’s degree was in the 20th century,” he said.
Utah Tech currently offers four graduate degree programs: Master of Accountancy, Master of Arts in technical writing and digital rhetoric, Master of Marriage and Family Therapy, and Master of Athletic Training.
The university is continuing that growth as it implements its fifth graduate study pathway in the fall: a fully online program where students can earn a Master of Nursing Educational Leadership.
Guyman said each of Utah Tech’s programs is created with its polytechnic mission as well as the needs of Southern Utah in mind.
The Master of Nursing Educational Leadership program as well as all of the new and upcoming graduate study programs were designed to have immediate applications to the current needs of their respective careers in order to best serve potential students, he added.
Utah Tech began its graduate study programs with the Master of Accountancy, which was introduced in January 2018.
Shortly after, in the fall semester of 2019, the university added the Master of Arts in Technical Writing and Digital Rhetoric, as well as two separate options for a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy degree.
The Master of Marriage and Family Therapy degree can be taken as a Master of Science in marriage and family therapy or as a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy.
The Master of Athletic Training was added in the summer of 2020.
