5 injured in 2-car T-bone collision on SR-56 in Cedar City

CEDAR CITY — Five people, including three children, were taken to the hospital by ambulance following a two-car crash on state Route 56 in Cedar City on Tuesday evening.

The incident, which was reported shortly after 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of SR-56 and Lund Highway, involved a white Kia sedan and a silver Infiniti sedan.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Bambi Baie said the Infiniti, which had an adult male driver as its only occupant, was heading west on SR-56, while the Kia, which was being driven by a woman with three children as passengers, had been heading east and was preparing to turn left onto northbound Lund Highway.

“She went to make that turn and he still had the yellow light as he was entering the intersection,” Baie told Cedar City News. “He T-boned her because she pulled in front of him.”

Baie said multiple witnesses said the light was just barely turning yellow as the Infiniti went through the intersection.

“They were all transported to the hospital,” said Baie, adding that she was not sure of the extent of the injuries.

Both cars sustained substantial damage and were towed from the scene.

Westbound traffic on SR-56 was confined to a single lane for approximately one hour while responders attended to the injured occupants and worked to clear the vehicles from the roadway.

Although it was snowing at the time of the crash, Baie said the weather did not appear to be a factor.

“She said she saw him but she couldn’t get out of the way,” Baie said of the Kia driver. “She thought that he was maybe going to stop, and so she just kind of pulled in front of him.”

This report is based on statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Ed. Note: An original version of this story said that one of the involved vehicles was an Acura. Police confirmed Wednesday that this vehicle was actually an Infiniti.
