Shortly before 1:40 p.m., officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of East 850 North and North 3050 East in St. George on a two-vehicle crash involving a blue Ford pickup truck and a dark gray Kia Soul.

St. George Police Sgt. Tyrell Bangerter told St. George News officers arrived to find that the driver of the Kia was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup was not seriously injured in the crash.

The pickup was found in the middle of the intersection partially blocking both directions of travel, while the overturned Kia came to rest upside down on the sidewalk nearest the Costco gas station.

Additional officers were also called in to assist with traffic control, while motorists were initially diverted off North 3050 East. Shortly thereafter traffic was reduced to a single lane in both directions as investigators processed the scene.

The St. George Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the cause of the crash and a drone was deployed to take measurements and capture high-resolution aerial images that will be used to document the crash site from above. Officers also questioned several witnesses who were in the area when the crash took place.

The identity of the deceased driver is not being released at this time, Bangerter said, and family notifications have been made.

The St. George Police Department, the St. George Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team, the St. George Fire Department, the Washington City Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, the Utah Department of Transportation’s Incident Management Team and a St. George City road crew responded and tended to the large scene.

The investigation was expected to continue for several hours, Bangerter said, so only limited information was available from the scene.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
