Paper Jams: Dave Torres plays a fusion of rock, country and blues at Cloud 9 Studios

FEATURE — Southern Utah’s live music scene is flourishing and the Canyon Media crew is back to highlighting local musicians, so gather around for another session of “Paper Jams.”

Coming to you from Cloud 9 Studios at Canyon Media, this month’s edition features Dave Torres. Although he’s now a software engineer by trade, his undeniable passion for music and songwriting is proof that rock never dies.

Watch (and hear) Dave Torres perform live from Cloud 9 Studios at Canyon Media in the media player above.

To start his set, Torres played an original track entitled “Angel or Ghost.” He followed it up with a cover of Chris Stapleton’s soulful ballad “You Should Probably Leave.”

Torres discovered his musical talent in ninth grade. The guitar was his instrument of choice, and after a couple of years, he started to explore his singing voice. He joined his first band, Down and Out, just out of high school and served as lead guitarist and vocalist.

During the next 15 years, Torres played in several rock bands in the Carbon County area, including Blitz, Checkmate, Double Down and The Edge. He also joined Keele N Time, a country band that opened up for such artists as Andy Griggs and Mark Wills. Eventually, his family and career took priority and he stopped performing.

Torres has slowly rekindled his love for music and live performance over the past year, and he now plays gigs in the St. George area. This time around, however, he’s a solo artist with only his voice and acoustic guitar to rely on. He performs his favorite rock, blues and country hits from back in the day as well as newer favorites and original songs.
