CEDAR CITY — Cedar High School took first place in both the boys and girls divisions of the annual Canyon View Invitational swim meet staged at Southern Utah University this past Friday and Saturday.
The meet attracted 13 teams, including several from Southern Utah high schools. Cedar’s girls scored 339 team points, while runner-up Crimson Cliffs scored 245.
On the boys’ side, the Reds accumulated 326 points, while host team Canyon View placed second with 303.5. See full listings of team placings and scores at bottom of this story.
Following are selected highlights from the meet, with emphasis on top-three finishes by Southern Utah athletes:
For the Cedar girls, Sydney Selinger won both of her individual events, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.32 and winning the 500 free in 6:13.93. Also for Cedar, Aspen Simper won the 200 free in a time of 2:08.01 and also placed second in the 100 free with a time of 58.56 seconds.
Also for Cedar, Addison Taylor placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 IM, while Natalie Moses took third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free. Teammate Olivia Price placed second in the 200 free.
Emma Brown of Desert Hills won the 50 free, posting a time of 26.55, narrowly edging runner-up Kate Walker of Crimson Cliffs, who finished in 26.59. Brown also had a down-to-the-wire finish in the 100 breast, where she placed second with a time of 1:14.38, just one-tenth of a second behind winner Melody Lake of Emery.
Walker also placed third in the 100 fly. Also for Crimson Cliffs, Peyton Perry took third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free, while Mia Nielsen placed third in the 500 free.
Other highlights included Rachel Hansen of Desert Hills taking second in the 500 free and Annicka Lovell of Canyon View placing third in the 100 back.
Cedar also won two of the girls relay events, the 200 medley and the 400 free.
In the boys meet, Andrew Carlile of Dixie placed first in both of his individual events, winning the 50 free in a time of 22.40 and the 100 back in a time of 54.24. His teammate Damon Ericksen won the 200 free in 1:52.56.
Taking first in individual races for Cedar were Tanner Dodds, who won the 200 IM in a time of 2:08.22, and Joseph Nevins, who won the 500 free in 5:43.94. Also for Cedar, Justin Granado placed third in the 200 IM and Andrew Sagers placed second in the 100 breast. Cedar also won both freestyle relay events and placed second in the 200-medley relay.
For Canyon View, Kurt Morgan won the 100 free in a time of 50.28 and also took second in the 200 IM. Also for the Falcons, Jacob Grimshaw placed third in both the 50 free and 100 fly, Samuel Despain took second in the 100 fly, and Nicholas Bittmenn and Joseph Anderson placed a respective second and third in the 100 back.
Troy Eggers of Desert Hills won the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.32. Gavin Pahnke of Hurricane placed third in that same event. Bronson Plumb of Crimson Cliffs placed second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free.
Additionally, Canyon View’s boys placed second in two relays, while Hurricane took third in two relays.
