ST. GEORGE — Utah Tech University’s Dance Program is bringing all types of dance genres to the stage as it presents its annual Student Dance Concert and invites the public to explore the variety of dances.
More than 20 Utah Tech students majoring and minoring in dance will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, in Eccles Main Stage Theatre located in the fine arts center on Utah Tech’s campus. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
“The featured dance pieces in this concert include four senior dance majors’ choreography projects,” said Sara Gallo, associate professor of dance. “As the instructor for the Choreography Project course, I’ve enjoyed seeing these students step into leadership roles in rehearsals and also the various ways they’ve implemented peer and instructor feedback to make their works stronger.”
The concert will feature innovative works choreographed entirely by Utah Tech students. The genres include aerial, ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop and modern dance.
All performances are under the direction of Gallo and Jennifer Weber, assistant professor of dance.
“I would describe my piece ‘The Story Never Ends’ as a piece that is meant to cater to everyone in the audience,” said Taylor Taft, a UT senior dance major. “It’s a piece purely meant to entertain and give the audience a chance to enter a new imaginative world.”
The Student Dance Concert is one of three performances in which Utah Tech students perform. The other two, Dance in Concert and The Ballroom Dance Concert, are both in the spring.
The student dancers must audition and enroll in DANC 4800: Dance Performance class, with regular rehearsals throughout the semester.
The Utah Tech University Dance Program provides students an opportunity to experience, train and refine the art of dance.
The program’s mission is “to provide a diverse population of students the opportunity to achieve their dance education goals by developing the skills of embodied practice and scholarly and creative inquiry.”
