On Thursday shortly after 4 p.m., a school resource officer was made aware of a possible assault involving a firearm in the area of 2700 East and 700 North in St. George, according to a statement released by the St. George Police Department on Friday.

St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News the call initially came in as a shots-fired call that was reported near one of the area schools after classes had ended for the day. The incident, she added, did not take place on school property.

Officers were dispatched to the area in search of any suspects involved, which is when investigators recovered evidence consistent with the information reported by the caller. As the search continued, all parties reportedly involved in the incident were found safe and uninjured, Mitchell said.

Police say through the course of the investigation, a firearm was found with the serial number removed, and one underage suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.

The juvenile was transported to the Washington County Juvenile Detention Center and three potential charges were submitted to juvenile court for review, including one count of felony discharge of a firearm, along with possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.

Mitchell said no injuries were reported and the incident posed no threat to the public. The identity of the suspect was not released since the incident involved a juvenile.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
