Dr. Michael A. Grant, the newest member of the rheumatology team, is now taking appointments and looks forward to serving area patients. He focuses on rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia and scleroderma, among other conditions.

Often chronic or lifelong, these diseases are difficult to diagnose and require a committed partnership between patient and physician.

“These patients really get improvements from the therapies we give them, more so than in a lot of other medical fields,” he said. “Once we’re able to make a diagnosis, we can see the patient’s quality of life visibly improve.”

A self-described “people person,” Grant was drawn to rheumatology because the field lends itself to creating lasting relationships with patients. He interviewed and shadowed the physicians at multiple clinics before coming to Southern Utah. Ultimately, the Vista Healthcare Joint and Arthritis Center, led by Dr. Jeffrey Mathews, proved to be the kind of practice he always hoped to establish.

The complex nature of rheumatological conditions presents unique challenges for both doctors and patients. Vista Healthcare brings world-class rheumatology services to St. George and surrounding communities, putting efficient patient care at the forefront while providing a warm, friendly environment.

“I thought it was a very unique clinic,” Grant said. “I have a lot of support in regards to the ancillary staff, which allows me to really focus on the patients, educate them and build relationships with them.”

Grant graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Alabama and received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in rheumatology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. During his training, he participated in several medical mission trips to underserved communities in Latin America.

Grant grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and was excited to find a community equally enthusiastic about enjoying the outdoors. He reads, travels, hikes, skis, golfs and plays basketball in his free time.

In medicine, and particularly a field like rheumatology, there are always new medications, guidelines, therapies and ways of approaching a diagnosis. Having completed fellowship training earlier this year, Grant is familiar with the latest developments and brings a fresh outlook to Vista Healthcare.

“I’m very excited in regards to the patients here,” he said. “Everyone that I’ve met has been so friendly.”
