According to a Cedar City Police news release issued Friday afternoon, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:40 a.m. to a report of an alarm at America First Credit Union branch located inside Lin’s Market at 150 N. Main St.

Police reportedly arrived to find the suspect still inside the supermarket.

The man, who police said is a client in a day program, reportedly had run away from staff while at the Main Street Library across the street.

Upon entering the grocery store, the man allegedly put a hooded sweatshirt over his head and walked up to the teller at the credit union, placed his hand inside his pocket as if to pretend he had a weapon and demanded money.

After being given an undisclosed amount of cash by the teller, the man unsuccessfully tried to flee the store but was stopped by other people, including the police officers who were just arriving.

All of the money was recovered and no weapons were found on the suspect, the press release states.

The man, who was identified as Dayne Slade, 33, was taken to Iron County Jail and booked a short time later on suspicion of one count of robbery, a second-degree felony.

Following the incident, the credit union appears to have closed for the remainder of the day, although its ATM machine is still operational. Customers with questions or concerns may call the customer service number at 800-999-3961, according to a sign announcing the temporary closure.

This report is based on statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
