Region 10 boys golf: Crimson Cliffs wins 4th consecutive region title

ST. GEORGE ā€” The Crimson Cliffs High School boys golf team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday, taking first place in the eighth and final weekly match of the regular season.

The Mustangs scored 293 as a team while runner-up Desert Hills scored 298. The match was played at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane, which will host the state 4A tournament in another two weeks.

The Mustangs, who placed first in every Region 10 match this season except for one, secured the fourth consecutive region title in the school’s four-year history.

Hurricane senior Michael Stirland had the top individual score on Wednesday with a 3-under-par 69. He became the fourth different player to win or tie for first in at least one weekly match this season, joining Lincoln Markham and Boston Bracken of Crimson Cliffs and Brock Porter of Desert Hills.

Crimson Cliffs was led on Wednesday by Markham and teammate Jarren Phillips, who each posted a 1-under 71 to tie for the team lead, with Bracken one stroke back at an even-par 72.

Coming in third place as a team on Wednesday were the Cedar Reds, who shot 316, led by Luke Barnes’s 72. After that was a three-way tie for fourth place, with Hurricane, Dixie and Snow Canyon all posting identical team scores of 321.

As it was the season’s final Region 10 match, the top 12 overall individual medalist awards were also handed out, with Markham finishing first overall, Stirland taking second and Bracken placing third.

“Iā€™m really proud of this group of boys,” Crimson Cliffs coach Cody Felts told St. George News after the match. “They worked so hard each and every week and they were always prepared. Not only are they all really good golfers, they are also all really good kids and fun to be around.”

The upcoming state tournament will also be at Sky Mountain on Oct. 12-13.

“We are excited about winning region today, but we also know we have more work ahead as we prepare for state on this same course in two weeks,” Felts added. “I know this group will continue to work hard and prepare for our next event.”
