CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Set beneath the colorful mountain landscapes and famous towering red rocks of Southern Utah lies the green, rolling hills of the luxurious Coral Canyon Golf Course. Designed by architect Keith Foster, this 7,200-yard, par-72 layout provides panoramic views from the red desert to the cliffs of Zion National Park, making it a golf experience you’re sure to remember.

After originally opening in 2000 under SunCor Golf Inc., the course quickly gained popularity and became the No. 1 golf course in Utah, said Marco Leoni, PGA, the course’s general manager. As of fall 2020, Coral Canyon changed their majority owner and management company to Z Golf Management, which has owned and operated Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Mesquite, Nevada, since 2014.

In two years, Leoni said they’ve made massive investments to make Coral Canyon better than ever. The course has new bunkers, new cart paths and new irrigation, along with thicker turf and renovations to the Coral Canyon Restaurant.

“Under the new management, there has been an almost $3 million investment added, with tee boxes, landscape, rock, grass and improved golf course conditions to be one of the top golf courses in Southern Utah,” he added.

In 2021, Coral Canyon superintendent and greenskeeper Josh Kent won the southern Nevada chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s Superintendent of the Year award, which Leoni said is a high honor. And it was Kent’s work in improving conditions and facilitating changes at the Coral Canyon that earned him the award.

Improvements include the overall course conditions, with the healthiest grass and structure the facility has seen in over 10 years. Leoni said that Coral Canyon uses full-season grass, which means that unlike other golf courses in the area, they don’t have to close down to overseed each year, a process in which grass seed is spread on top of the existing grass to promote new growth or swap out seasonal turfs. This allows Coral Canyon to be open year-round without any maintenance shutdowns.

The facility also has created or redesigned four new tee boxes: the sixth hole’s tee box has been redesigned, adding about 15 yards of play surface; the seventh hole has a new black tee box; the third hole has a new red tee box; and a new tee box currently is being created for the second hole.

Additional changes at Coral Canyon include a revamped restaurant and menu with a new outdoor patio area to enjoy the sprawling lawn and red rock views.

“The restaurant serves really good high-quality food, and people get excited about some of the new changes we’ve done in there,” Leoni said.

With the monsoonal rains over the last few years, Leoni said the golf course received an excessive amount of rain from the Coral Canyon community along with rain runoff from I-15, which flooded and washed out most of the golf course holes. This required hole restructuring and has now been redesigned to withstand the harsh elements for generations to come.

“The overall layout of the golf course is one of the most fun ones in town,” Leoni said. “It’s challenging, but also very playable for all skill levels. Our customer service is top-notch. We want our guests to have a memorable experience from start to finish.”
