ST. GEORGE— Following the success of the St. George Art Museum’s Facing Fire Exhibition, the museum will showcase three new exhibits this fall through Nov. 26.

Featured will be “Our Hidden World: A Study of Human Emotion” by local artist Audrey Taylor, “Day of the Dead” juried exhibition and celebration and “Big Sky” from the museum’s permanent collection, according to a news release from the City of St. George.

There will be one special event per exhibit to highlight the nuances of the pieces and artists.

  • Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.: Art Conversation with Taylor (“Our Hidden World”)
  • Oct. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Day of the Dead Celebration
  • Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.: Art Conversation with artist Roland Lee (“Big Sky”)

A multi-disciplinary studio artist living and working in St. George, Taylor (“Our Hidden World”) specializes in abstract expressionist painting and modern geometric sculpture, the news release said. Her work can be seen at Arrowhead Gallery, Art Provides, Sunset Framer and Gallery, Caffe Elevato and River Rock Roasting Co.

“All of us feel emotions. Emotions universally bind us as a part of the human experience,” Taylor said in the news release. “In the world of art, an artist can evoke emotions with their work, or share a glimpse into an emotional personal experience. Art can even be a therapeutic release.”

With parties, foods, drinks and activities that the dead enjoyed while alive, “Day of the Dead” honors the lives of the deceased. At the museum’s Day of the Dead celebration on Oct. 19, there will be refreshments served and a special performance by Danza y Color Utah, a Mexican Folklore Dance Group.

“There will be many other fun activities to take part in during our Day of the Dead celebration, including an interactive ofrenda where you can write messages to your dearly departed loved ones,” Museum Manager Natalie Gula said in the news release. “Everyone is invited to explore this fun, donation-based event.”

“Big Sky” features a selection of artwork from the museum’s permanent collection. One of the artists featured prominently in this exhibit, Charles Thomas, drew inspiration for painting the sky from the famously stunning sunsets of Arizona.

“This exhibit encourages the audience to redirect their gaze to the incredible views we have right above us,” said Museum Curator Stephanie Wheeler in the release. “We invite you to get lost in the wonder and beauty that is the sky.”

According to the news release:

Located at 47 East 200 North across from the Main Street U.S. Post Office in historic downtown St. George, the former sugar beet seed storage facility was transformed into an elegant showcase for art in 1997. With over 1,100 pieces in the permanent collection, the St. George Art Museum is open from Tuesday- Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum is donation based. Donations directly support education and operating expenses of the museum.
