Pine View girls, Snow Canyon boys win SUU’s high school XC meet

CEDAR CITY — The Pine View girls and the Snow Canyon boys were the respective team winners at the Southern Utah University High School Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at Cedar City’s Bicentennial Park.

With senior Brooklyn Hill leading the way for the Pine View girls with a second-place time of 19 minutes flat, the Panthers placed five runners among the top 10 finishers to score 31, while second-place Cedar finished with 53 team points. 

The top female individual finisher was Cadence Kasprick of Moab’s Grand County High School. The Red Devils, who are coached by former SUU distance runners Jacob and Maddy Francis, placed third as a team in the varsity girls race with 55 points. In the varsity boys race, Pine View senior Trey Despain was the overall winner, crossing the finish line in a time of 15:37.37. He was followed by two Snow Canyon runners who also broke the 16-minute mark, with Finn Lee taking second in 15:44.80 and Bryan Richardson placing third in 15:59.70. Snow Canyon posted a winning team score of 45, while runner-up Cedar scored 66. Pine View and Desert Hills each had 77 points, taking third and fourth, respectively.

Pine View coach Dave Holt said afterward he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We were really happy with how all of our runners responded to our goals for the day,” he said. “Each group had a specific goal we were working on today, based on how things went last week, and they all looked very strong in that.”
