Teammates and close friends Bracken and Markham each shot an eight-under par 63 to tie for first place in Region 10’s third weekly match of the season, played at Southgate Golf Club in St. George.

The Mustangs posted a winning score of 275 for the second straight week, while runner-up Desert Hills finished at 289.

During an interview outside the clubhouse following the match, Bracken and Markham both spoke to Devin Dixon of Fox Sports Southern Utah.

Bracken said that when he had three holes to go, he asked his coach Cody Felts how Markham was doing.

“I was four under at the time and (Coach) said he’s six,” Bracken said. “I was like, ‘Shoot, I gotta get going. I’m not gonna let Linc beat me.’

“I actually had to make like a 30-footer on the seventh, and then two-putted for birdie on eight. Then (I) hit a four-iron 230 (yards) on nine to about six feet, and then made the putt and I was like, bang! Big time! Eight under.”

Bracken, whose group played the course’s back nine holes first, also spoke of hitting two balls out of bounds during the round.

“It was a little unfortunate,” he said. “I got off to kind of a hotter start, I’d say, with the putter, but then I OB’ed on 15, long in the green and it kind of took away some of the flow.”

Markham noted that he didn’t even make any longer putts to achieve his eight-under score.

“I made like one 15-footer for the longest putt,” Markham said. “I just played the par fives well. I think I birdied every one of them, which is sweet. Just no bogeys.”

Placing third was Michael Stirland of Hurricane, who putted for an eagle on the final hole to finish with a score of 65. Luke Barnes of Cedar shot a 67 to finish fourth, while Brock Porter of Desert Hills was fifth at 68. Coming in sixth place with a one-over score of 72 was Kilo Brown of Desert Hills.

Next week’s Region 10 match is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.
