ST. GEORGE — Crimson Cliffs High School won Region 10’s boys golf match for the second week in a row.
With junior Boston Bracken leading the way with a seven-under-par score of 64, the Mustangs posted a team score of 275, outpacing runner-up Desert Hills by 10 strokes. The 18-hole match was played Thursday at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George.
The previous week, at Coral Canyon Golf Course in Washington City, Crimson Cliffs had scored 294 to runner-up Desert Hills’ 300. Bracken didn’t play in that match, as he was competing in another tournament in Texas. However, two of Bracken’s teammates stepped up to take the top two individual spots, with Crimson junior Lincoln Markham shooting a 69 and freshman Dylan Winona posting a 71, as the only two golfers to shoot under par during the Week 1 opener.
“I’ve got a great team around me,” Bracken said after Thursday’s match. “It’s exciting when I’m gone and the team can still get the job done, and then when I come back, we go out and dominate.”
Bracken said he’ll miss next week’s Region 10 match as well, due to another tournament. Prior to that, he’s also scheduled to compete in the Utah Open in Provo starting on Friday. In fact, he skipped a scheduled practice round for the Utah Open so he wouldn’t miss Thursday’s match in St. George.
Asked how Thursday’s round went, Bracken said he started out by missing the green from 70 yards out on the first hole.
“I was like, ‘Oh no, this is not good,’” he told Devin Dixon of Fox Sports Southern Utah.
“The greens were a little slower than I’ve been playing over the summer, but I made a really good putt on (hole) five,” he added. “ And then I just kind of played really good, solid golf and only missed one more green after that.”
Also coming in under par on Thursday were Kilo Brown of Desert Hills, who shot a 69, and Braylon Bingham of Cedar, Michael Stirland of Hurricane, Dylan Winona of Crimson Cliffs and Jarren Phillips of Crimson Cliffs, all of whom shot 70. Making even par at 71 were Boston Dixon of Desert Hills and Lincoln Markham of Crimson Cliffs.
Next week’s Region 10 match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 25 at Southgate Golf Club in St. George.
