Shortly after 11 a.m. Monday, officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of West Sunset Boulevard and Westmoreland Drive in St. George on a two-vehicle crash involving a red Chevrolet Equinox and a Chrysler minivan.

St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News that responders arrived to find the woman driving the Equinox sustained a minor injury to her arm, but she was not transported to the hospital.

With both eastbound lanes on Sunset Boulevard initially blocked by the wreckage, additional officers responded to the scene to divert traffic away from the crash as emergency personnel worked to tend to the scene and clear the roadway.

In the meantime, the Utah Department of Transportation also responded and pulled the Equinox out of the roadway while two tow trucks were en route, which enabled officers to reopen one of the westbound lanes to relieve the backup of vehicles.

At the time of the crash, Mitchell said, the Equinox was heading west on Sunset Boulevard, while the Chrysler was heading east along the same street. Approaching the intersection, the Equinox pulled out into the intersection to make a left-hand turn to head south on Westridge Drive, where it was struck by the eastbound Chrysler that continued through the intersection.

The impact spun around both vehicles in the roadway until the minivan came to rest partially blocking one of the eastbound lanes on Sunset, as well as the southbound lane on Westridge Drive. The Equinox came to rest partially blocking the eastbound lane on Sunset Boulevard nearest the median.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were rendered inoperable and towed from the roadway following the crash. The driver of the Equinox was later cited for failing to yield on a left-hand turn, said Mitchell, adding traffic was impacted for approximately 45 minutes.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
