ST. GEORGE — Four people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries on Sunday after heavy rains caused a driver to spin out and crash, authorities said.

Shortly before 6 p.m, two crashes were reported on Interstate 15 in the Virgin River Gorge, one southbound by mile marker 22 and one northbound by mile marker 26, Beaver Dam/Littlefield Fire District Assistant Chief Andre Ojeda said. However, he said, responders determined only the northbound collision had occurred, and the southbound caller mistakenly reported their location.

The crash involved an SUV with five occupants and a four-door sedan with two, both traveling northbound on I-15, Ojeda said. The SUV was in the outside lane while the sedan attempted to pass it.

Witnesses reported a sudden onset of heavy rains, causing the sedan to hydroplane, Ojeda said. The vehicle spun around and hit the guardrail, which sent it back into the outside lane where the SUV “clipped” it.

The fire district transported one person from the sedan and three from the SUV to the hospital with minor injuries, Ojeda said.

The Arizona Highway Patrol, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and the St. George Fire Department also responded to the call, Ojeda said.
