The Cedar Reds and the Canyon View Falcons met on Cedar’s home pitch Tuesday afternoon, with the Reds picking up a 5-1 victory in the preseason contest between the rival Iron County schools.

The game ended early thanks to a rainstorm that hit with about 18 minutes remaining in the second half, causing the officials to clear all of the players off the field due to lightning. The junior varsity game that was to have followed has been rescheduled for the afternoon of Sept. 20, when Cedar’s varsity team has a bye in its Region 10 schedule.

Keana Tolman, one of three seniors on Cedar’s young squad, scored four goals and assisted on another, with junior Rylan Tebbs also netting a goal and picking up two assists.

The Reds led 4-1 at halftime, with Tolman converting a penalty-kick goal shortly before the first half ended.

Maya Nichols scored Canyon View’s lone goal off an assist by fellow sophomore Hadlee Farrow.

Tuesday’s loss to Cedar dropped the Falcons to 2-2 overall in preseason play. After a 6-1 loss to Stansbury to kick off the Tooele Tournament on Aug. 4, Canyon View bounced back to defeat Kearns 1-0 on Aug. 5 and Juan Diego 2-1 on Aug. 6. Both games were played at Stansbury during its three-day preseason invitational.

Canyon View, which competes in the 3A classification’s Region 12, has five more preseason matches lined up in August, including home contests against Pine View on Aug. 11 and against Millard on Aug. 25. The Falcons will officially begin their region schedule when they host the Grand County Red Devils on Sept. 6.

Cedar, meanwhile, improved to 2-1 in preseason play with the win over Canyon View. Cedar started its schedule with a 2-1 loss at 5A’s Brighton on Aug. 3. The following day, the Reds defeated the Highland Rams 2-1, at Salt Lake City.

Cedar has one more preseason game lined up this week when the Reds are scheduled to play the Parowan Rams at Parowan on Friday at 4 p.m.

The 4A classification’s Region 10 will then start its regular season the following Thursday, Aug. 18, when the Cedar Reds host the Dixie Flyers at 4 p.m. Two other Region 10 matchups will take place later that same evening, with Crimson Cliffs hosting Desert Hills and Pine View hosting Hurricane, both at 7:30 p.m.

Crimson Cliffs will look to pick up where it left off last year, when the Mustangs went 12-0 in Region 10 play, followed by two playoff wins and a trip to the 4A state championship game, where they lost to Mountain Crest, 1-0, in a heartbreaker that lasted two overtimes. Crimson Cliffs had also advanced to the 4A state semifinals the year before, in the fall of 2020.

Meanwhile, Snow Canyon, which has a bye on Aug. 18, will begin its Region 10 schedule the following Tuesday, Aug. 23, when the Warriors host Pine View at 7:30 p.m.
