Shortly before 8:30 a.m., officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on Old Highway 91 in Ivins involving a  Mazda passenger car and a Volkswagen Jetta, both silver in color, that were severely damaged and partially blocking the highway.

Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Reed Briggs told St. George News the crash took place near the corner of Red Mountain Boulevard, where the highway was temporarily closed immediately after the collision and additional officers were called in to assist in traffic control. As soon as motorists were diverted away from the scene, he said, the highway was reopened to traffic.

Briggs also said only minor injuries were reported at the scene and no one was transported to the hospital.

At the time of the crash, the Mazda was heading south on Red Mountain Boulevard, while the Jetta was heading west on Old Highway 91.

As the Mazda pulled out to turn left on Highway 91 heading east it was struck by the westbound Jetta, and the impact spun both vehicles around and sent the Jetta off the roadway where it jumped the curb and crashed into an electrical box located several feet from the highway. The box was dislodged and pushed approximately three inches from its base.

Briggs added the Mazda told officers that seconds before the crash, a semitractor-trailer heading west along the highway made a right turn onto Red Mountain Boulevard, partially blocking their view of traffic. As such, they were unable to see the westbound Jetta until it was too late, he said.

Rocky Mountain Power was notified of the damage as the Jetta was pulled from the sidewalk and then towed from the scene, said Briggs, adding there were no power outages reported following the crash. The Mazda also was heavily damaged and removed from the roadway.

The Mazda driver, he said, was cited for failing to yield on a left-hand turn. The impact on traffic was minimal.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
