ST. GEORGE — A mountain bike ride through a prohibited part of Zion National Park did not go well for the 19-year-old rider Monday evening as it ended in a helicopter ride to the nearest hospital.

The man was riding off-road on slickrock on the east side of the national park, which is not allowed, park spokesman Jonathan Shafer told St. George News.

“Bikes are only allowed on park roads and the Pa’rus Trail,” Shafer said in a text.

Sometime before 6 p.m., the rider fell 60 feet and received multiple compound fractures.

Park rangers, EMTS and a paramedic responded to the incident and contacted Intermountain’s Lifeflight helicopter to transport the injured cyclist to St. George Regional Hospital.
